week 5: The dust has settled and green leaves are sprouting after the first rains!

Ironically, we had our first rains this week. We were woken up in the middle of the night by the most amazing roar of hard rain falling on the tin roof. It continued for hours, and by morning, we could smell the thirsty earth as the water had already started evaporating. Anyone from here will know the exact smell I am speaking of.  I cant believe how green the beautiful bush has turned after just a few hours of rain! The cooler (still 28-30 degree) weather seemed to calm LJ a lot, and this week he has seemed a lot more settled. We've been on a few treasure hunts, had a lot of fun jumping in warm muddy puddles and have even had our first swim in the rain. LJ wanted to take his dad fishing at the bream farm, so we set out to do that last weekend. The problem was that, between us, the only one who was happy to handle the worms, was Lily. The guy working there ended up just giving us some of the fish food rolled up with bread to use as bait, that was a lot easier than trying to thread ...

Finding our rhythm to the African beat

It would appear that the zebra have become our most regular visitors! They have discovered the bird seeds in the garden.  LJ loves to watch them and has found a safe spot in the tree to spy from. He has taken longer to warm up to this way of life than his 'happy go lucky' little sister, but after figuring out more of a routine he finally seems to be accepting it. I didn't realise it would take him so long to adjust and it has taken a lot from us to try help him through all his magnified feelings. I am so grateful for my friends and family who have heard my tears and offered their advice and support!  The other night a hippo came strolling past while we were sitting on the verandah. They seem significantly bigger when they are walking through your garden than when they are a few hundred meters away in the water! Knowing that Kariba is where one of my besties (Vee) grew up, we decided to venture  out and explore the area that holds so many fond memories for her and her fami...

Baby elephant in the pool and a wild story...week 3 in wildest Africa

Week 3 and its been great having a rental car! We went exploring over the weekend to see the wall and it was quite a sight to behold. The vast amount of water dammed up by this (relatively small) wall is crazy.  We are still quite limited financially because we haven't managed to get local cash sorted. Spending on our SA cards comes at a huge cost with bank rates being significantly lower than the going rate. So patience is still very necessary at this point. The benefit of it is that we're left with lots to look forward to. We can now drive to the places we want to visit, but cant afford to go in yet!  Wild story: There is a village called mahombekombe which is right below the viewpoint for the wall, about 10km from where we are staying. 3 years ago there was a female lion with 2 adolescent cubs that started to hunt people by pouncing out from behind bushes along the paths that they frequently walked.  Obviously something had to be done about it because they had tasted h...
